Keeping on with our body positive resolutions, let's talk about food. Oh, food. You and I have had such a complicated relationship. It's like one of those cheezy romance flicks where you see the two angsty teenagers imagine all these reasons why they can't possibly be together and you are watching the movie thinking, oh just get it on you dumb-asses! You know you want to!
That's like me and food. It's quite simple, if I will let it be. But we live in the information age and we are so inundated with messaging around what is and isn't healthy. And it's hard not to get caught up in that. The barrage keeps scrolling through my head like one of those ticker-tape news streams full of catch phrases. Carbs! Gluten! Sugar! Red meat! Wine! Every trip to the grocery store is like that anxiety dream where you forgot to study all semester and now you are late for the final exam. I'm standing there reading labels, trying to figure out which cracker has more fiber but less sugar, and it's all just so exhausting.
So what if I cut myself a little slack and accepted that I will not make perfect decisions about food every time, but I will start from a place of mindfulness and do my best to listen to what my body needs? Well that takes a whole lot of anxiety out of the equation. And then maybe food and I can have our happy ending.
